10 WAYS YOU CAN CARE FOR THE OCEAN THIS WORLD OCEAN DAY
It’s apparent how important the marine ecosystem is to the planet as more than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface is taken up by our oceans. With this large surface coverage, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the marine species outnumber those on land.
There have been many discoveries about the oceans in the past few centuries, however, according to the Ocean Service, man has explored less than five percent of the Earth’s oceans which goes to show that there is so much more to be explored. This is one of the reasons why we should protect the ocean.
WHY SHOULD WE CARE FOR THE OCEAN
The oceans provide limitless benefits to our planet and the living species that live here. From the air we breathe that the oceans produce, to the food we eat, and medicines for some illnesses, all which the oceans provide. Have you ever asked yourself, how can I protect the ocean? Now is the time.
There are so many activities you can do in the ocean. Swimming, kayaking, whale watching, and many other recreational activities.
As for the economy, many people benefit greatly from employment from ocean dependent businesses.
Not only that, with more than half of Earth’s surface coverage, the oceans are also essential in regulating the climate and the weather patterns.
The oceans provide many benefits to not only us, humans, but also to all other living creatures and the planet we live in.
However, the vast ocean is not limitless and not immune to human impact which people seem to have not realized until only recently.
How can we prevent the further ruins that threaten the oceans and the marine environments?
Here are a few ways we can help care for the oceans and marine life.
Now here are 10 ways you can protect the ocean this World Oceans Day - June 8th
World's Ocean Day is all about celebrating the world’s shared oceans and their importance to the planet as well as to raise awareness about the vital role they play in our lives.
There are several ways on how to save the ocean and protect the ocean around your home, around the community, and on the water. Here are 10 ways to help save the ocean.
Use water supply wisely. The less water we use, the less excess runoff and wastewater that flows into the ocean. Even a little thing like turning off the tap while brushing your teeth counts!
Go for non-toxic, chemical free products for cleaning, grooming & gardening. If you do use nasty chemicals like insecticides or pesticides, make sure you dispose of such products properly. Did you know you can use natural garlic & chilli oil to keep the insects away in your garden instead? Also, you can start with your grooming products! Check out these all natural, chemical-free deodorants and shampoos.
Cut down on disposable items and use reusables and recyclables instead. Things like plastic bags, cups, straws are easily blown by the wind as they are light, so it’s better to avoid these, as well as all single use plastics.
Due to demand, destruction of habitat, and improper fishing practices, the global fish population is rapidly diminishing. You can help prevent it by choosing seafood that is both healthy and sustainable instead of going for overexploited species. Aside from that, when grocery shopping, choose reusable items, items without plastic packaging, and bring your own reusable bags.
If you can walk the distance you’re going to, just leave your car at home. Or ride your bicycle. If it’s not possible, you can also carpool from time to time.
Be conscious of your energy use at home, or at work. You can use energy efficient light bulbs, turn off all power at the wall, and avoid oversetting your thermostat. At work, if it’s possible, use the stairs.
If you’re fishing for fun, you can follow the ‘catch and release’ practices to keep more fish alive. If you’re doing it for survival, do it sustainably. Avoid using nets, fish only in areas that can sustain it, and be mindful of which species you are taking from the sea.
Certain products contribute to harming marine life. Avoid purchasing things like coral jewelries, turtle shell accessories and other products that are made from marine animals.
Be responsible while doing recreational activities on the water like kayaking, boating and more. Be aware of the marine animals around you. Don’t throw anything in the water, and research eco-travel options for your vacation.
When you’re going to the beach, always clean up after yourself. Avoid interfering with wildlife. If there are clean up operations in your community or near your area, you can volunteer, that way you can also help encourage other people to care for marine life. Another good practice is to always carry an extra bag with you when you visit the beach, to pick up trash that others have left behind or that has washed up on the beach.
You can help save and protect the ocean wherever you are. Whether you are at home, work, or traveling around the world. By educating yourself about the ocean and marine life, you can make yourself aware about the issues threatening this vital system and the things you can do to prevent it.
